Adult education has been a fundamental part of further education and Lifelong Learning for decades. It can be seen as a tool to remove illiteracy from society. It gives people a chance to increase their education after school has finished or besides their vocational education or professional development.

In many European countries, Adult Education has a long history. In Austria, for example, it started in 1885 in Krems (Lower Austria) and in Vienna 1887. The focus of educational activities was set in Vienna. Numerous well-known scientists were involved in “teaching the people”. After World War II, the association of “Austrian folks high schools” was founded (1950).

Adult Education is an important part of the process of lifelong learning. The term of Adult Education is understood to refer to all types of formal, non-formal and targeted informal learning by adults, and equally encompasses all vocational, general educational, political and cultural teaching and learning processes for adults. Previously, adults have completed an initial education phase, which can be of varying duration and level. Adult Education is based on educational policy strategies, responsibility, organizational structures, legal and financial principles[1].

This example is typical for the development of Adult Education in Europe.

The FAdE-in project aims to develop an innovative approach to Adult Education courses by using “flipped learning or training”. The method of the “flipped classroom” was developed by Jon Bergman and is successfully used in school education and vocational education.

So, it’s time to implement the idea of flipped learning also in Adult Education.
